Senith Mathews, Founder

Senith Mathews is the founder of GraduateTutor.com.  Having seen many MBA classmates struggle with their quantitative subjects and having tutored some of them, Senith saw first-hand the need for high quality tutoring services.  About two years ago, he felt technology developments had made it feasible to provide tutoring services online and so began Graduatetutor.com to provide high quality MBA tutoring services.  He was pleasantly surprised to see that GraduateTutor.com’s services are being availed of by not just MBA students but also by working professionals, other graduate students and universities.  Senith is currently very active in tutor recruitment and student services as he feels that these two functions are the most critical aspect of the GraduateTutor.com experience.  He also oversees the marketing and operations team at GraduateTutor.com.

Prior to founding GraduateTutor.com, Senith worked as a management consultant at Mercer Management Consulting (now Oliver Wyman) out of their Dallas office, consulting on strategy, operational, private equity, M&A and valuation projects.  Senith has over 10 years of professional management experience including leading a non profit performing arts organization and advising multinationals investing in India as part of Arthur Andersen’s Tax and Business advisory division in India.

Senith Mathews is a qualified Chartered Accountant (~CPA) and has a MBA from the Cox School of Business at SMU in Dallas, TX.

Liz’s MBA finance tutoring experience

We love hearing from out students!  See Liz’s experience with Graduate Tutor in her own words.

“Today was my first session with Graduatetutor.com and I was pleasantly surprised.   I am a seasoned marketing executive but I have never really had a good grasp of finance.  But after two sessions I felt that I really had a a good grasp on some of the key principles of valuation and capital budgeting. They walked me through the assignment ensuring that I understood the underlying formulas as well as the concepts on broader terms.  We covered a lot of material so I feel that I really got a good value for my money.   I recommend them wholeheartedly and I am looking forward to the next session.
Liz, Pace University, New York City
We must warn you that we cant teach you all about valuation and capital budgeting in two sessions!  She came well prepared for her finance tutoring session and so we were just fine tuning her concepts or adding the “icing on the cake”.

Financial assistance from colleges

The WSJ reports on more colleges provideing students financial aid.  Colleges must also help weak students with tutoring support where possible.  Some of our students have had to discountinue their tutoring programs despite needing help badly due to financial hardships.  Some universities hear the pain and are sponsoring or subsidizing tutoring costs for week students.

We would love to have universities sponsor all or some of the tutoring costs as there there is not much we can do on our end with regard to pricing.  If you have any ideas, suggestions or leads please do let us know.

Buy An Internship? Is this fair?

The current economic situation is causing new developments.  This WSJ article talks about students & parents buying internships and raises a good question: Does this give wealthy students an unfair advantage?  Yes it does!

We extend that question and ask:  Is this fair? Who is responsible to maintain fairness here?  Clearly this is not fair to those deserving students who can’t afford to pay for an internship!

Students need all the help they can get and we at Graduatetutor.com try as hard as possible to provide help by making learning easier.  Our service is expensive because we provide high quality tutoring.  We require  qualified/experienced people to teach advanced business topics in finance, accounting and statistics and these people are expensive. Our cost does not allow everybody who could benefit from our service to access it.  Those who can afford it (the wealthy) use it and benefit immensely.   The wealthy are clearly at an advantage!

Who is responsible for maintaining fairness and equality? We try to reduce costs and make tutoring more affordable.  We stay online, buy used text books, minimize overheads and more to reduce operational costs. Our tutors however have rents/mortgages to pay, children to send to school and costs to pay!

We believe it is the universities responsibility to maintain fairness.  We belive that universities must do its best to provide its students with interships? We are working with select universities to provide tutoring support for the deserving students.  Universities identify needy students (academic & financial) to sponsor a few hours of tutoring.  This way if a student really needs the tutoring support and can’t financially afford it, he/she can avail it through the university.

College students need all the help they can get. Do let us know if you can get more universities into our program to make tutoring more affordable for more deserving students.

More women in EMBA programs?

See related article in the WSJ.  While it will be difficult to close the gap, those that put in the right efforts will see results.  We at www.Graduatetutor.com are committed to assisting women MBA students by providing them the tutoring support they need.

We will be willing to work with MBA schools to offer them discounts or scholarship if that will help.

Evidence: Online tutoring is effective!

A visit to your doctor meant a visit to the hospital or a clinic. But not any more – at least in Hawaii!  Starting this January Americal Well along with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii allow patients to visit their doctors online.  Instead of waiting for an appointment or driving a long distance to a doctor’s office patients can go online to chat with a doctor! Read more about it in this NYT article.

Dr Roy Schoenberg, American Well’s co-founder says that “national studies on online care have found that patients would like to have Web chats with primary care doctors about colds or diabetes management, for example, or with specialists about symptoms such as lower back pain or bad headaches.”

If medical care can be delivered online, tutoring can just as effectively be done online.  Ofcourse, we are not taking their word for this 🙂  We have been testing this service for the last one year and have great feedback from our students.

Why experiment with multiple tutors to find a good quality tutor in MBA level finance? (Or for that matter in MBA level statistics, acconting, operations research or financial modeling or operations research). Or why travel to meet a high quality Graduate level/MBA tutor?
Just log on to GraduateTutor.com or call us to get a high quality tutor at a time convenient for you.

Hawaii is ideally suited for online activity given the travel hassels across islands.  However it is not just the seas that cause incovenience – high levels of traffic, tolls, availability of specialist, scheduling or sheer distances between places cause customers inconveniences.  These inconveniences are significantly reduced or eliminated by online tutoring.

GraduateTutor.com provides high quality online tutoring to MBA students and working professionals anywhere in the world (almost)! Log on or call us to experience high quality online tutoring.

Tutoring in 2009 – ‘Make Learning Easier’

Below is our annual letter to students.  We thought many of you may find it interesting to know where we as an organization are and what we plan for 2009.

Email follows :

Happy New Year!

First, I am writing on behalf of all of us at GraduateTutor.com to wish you a great year ahead! May the hard work you put into your studies result in academic success and great personal and professional opportunities in 2009!

Second, we are glad that you chose to get high quality online tutoring and that we had the opportunity to work with you in 2008.  We want to thank you for choosing to work with GraduateTutor.com.

Finally, I want to give you a brief update on where we are as an organization and what we plan to work on this coming year.

We are a year old and are very pleased with the feedback you have provided. While we grow, our continuing focus will remain on Making Learning Easier by providing high quality specialized tutoring services.

The following are our immediate priorities.

  • New subjects: We will be adding new subjects.  Advanced finance topics, data analysis tools, decision making, corporate finance case studies and CPA & CFA topics are high on our priority list.
  • New faculty: We are looking to recruit and train additional faculty this year.  Most of our faculty are MBAs or CPAs and often teach at various universities/business programs.
  • MBA/Campus representatives: We want to expand the number of MBA/Campus representatives in various MBA programs and/or geographic territories. Our representatives are paid commissions and find this opportunity an excellent way to earn a little income on the side. If you are interested or know anyone who may be interested please do let us know.
  • Student Support Center: We are working on developing an offshore support center to eventually provide round the clock service.  We will begin a test initiative this year and expand after evaluating the results.

Do share your feedback with us.  We appreciate your thoughts and hope to make this a more valuable service.

Happy New Year again! We wish you plenty of success this coming year and look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

What Graduate Tutor will not do!

We get a lot of questions on what does Graduate Tutor do?  The short answer is that we provide live online private tutoring.  Click here to read more on the type of service we provide MBA students and business executives.

We abide by generally accepted university honor codes.

Sometimes to fully understand what we do, it is helpful to know to know what we do not do!

Homework

Our MBA tutors do not do your homework for you. However, we will teach you the concepts that enable you to do your homework.  We will also be happy to provide you with tutoring assistance as you work on your homework.

MBA assignments

We do not do Graduate or MBA assignments for students.  However, we do  assist with MBA assignments by coaching students through the process. This includes tutoring MBA students on the concepts and theories or frameworks needed to complete the assignments, helping with selecting  assignment topics, finding relevant materials, etc.

The underling principle

Why do we not do MBA homework or MBA assignments? The main reason is that we do not want to steal your learning experience. If we did do MBA homework or MBA assignments, our graduate students would not learn what  these assignments / homework are designed to teach them. We want to make your learning process easier not prevent it!

Often, we have students whose faculty or teaching assistants are either not available or have not interest in helping / teaching / tutoring students individually even if they need it.  We even have students say that they have never had a class or the concepts were never addressed in class but were expected to pick it up on their own! We will be happy to assist in these cases.

In summary, if you are looking for someone to do your MBA homework or MBA assignments, we will not be of much help! But if you are a genuine student seeking help in learning, our MBA Tutors  can be of great value to you.
