Tutoring has taken a new shape and form in the recent past. It used to be a largely unstructured process. But studies have proven time and again that peer tutoring can improve learning, bring about academic achievement and improve one’s approach towards grasping concepts.

The University of San Diego goes the extra mile to make sure that their students have no dearth of this opportunity. Students themselves tutor their peers and can also earn credit this way. This article goes into detail about how the University of San Diego College of Arts and Science takes a holistic approach in tutoring their students and the society around them as well.

Learning Center

USD provides tutoring for a range of subjects like Math, Chemistry, English, etc. Every subject is assigned to a Learning Centre with its own objectives and has schedules drawn for each semester. For instance, the Math Learning Centre, as they call it focuses on enabling students to be independent learners by teaching basics. Most of these subjects have three days in a week and on an average 2 hours per day dedicated to them. For the English language, USD has a Writing Centre that is open five days a week and dedicates forty five minutes for each session.

Communication skills can break or make one’s future. Standing by this strongly, USD has a dedicated department for Languages, Cultures and Literatures which aims in developing language proficiency, intercultural competency, etc. Students can tutor other students after fulfilling certain requirements laid down by the college.

USD offers a vast variety of languages including Arabic, Chinese and Italian. The tutors work on grammatical concepts, vocabulary building through conversations and oral presentations. Thanks to its global presence and reputation in the education arena, USD has students from all over the world, making it a global village by itself and it is hence able to provide numerous tutors for each language.  Each tutor is allotted a one hour session and availability is on first-come-first- serve basis.
